Reconfiguring the Public: Art, Pedagogy & Participation I
The seminar Reconfiguring the Public: art, pedagogy & participation presented by the Experimental Nucleus of Education & Art at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (MAM-Rio) from 8th to the 10th of November, 2011, explored the role of museums, institutions and alternative cultural spaces in the 21st century. The seminar included panel discussions, workshops and study groups involving artists, curators and educators and was a follow up to a seminar presented at MoMA, New York in July 2011 in collaboration with Instituto MESA. Its Rio de Janeiro version included Wendy Woon and Pablo Helguera from MoMA, José Roca, Curator of the 8th Mercosul Biennial, Eugenio Valdés Figueroa and Bia Jabor from Casa Daros, as well as the artists Oscar Muñoz and Juan Manuel Echavarría from Columbia, Ernesto Neto and Ricardo Basbaum from Brasil, critic Mick Wilson from Ireland, among other invitees.
The seminar commemorated the first anniversary of the Experimental Nucleus of Education & Art at MAM and aimed to explore and affirm new critical perspectives on museum work as a laboratory of integration of curatorial, artistic and pedagogy practices.

The second seminar Reconfiguring the Public: art, pedagogy & participation II took place on the 8th and 9th of November 2012 at MAM-Rio and continued the discussions of the first and sought to further the debates exploring new models and perspectives for 21st-century museums and cultural institutions. Among participants from Brazilian institutions were Eugenio Valdés Figueroa and Bia Jabor, respectively Director and Manager of Art and Education at Casa Daros; Heloisa Buarque de Hollanda, Coordinator of the Advanced Program of Contemporary Culture and Universidade das Quebradas PACC/UFRJ; the artists Mana Bernardes and Lula Wanderley; Luiz Lima, photographer and educator from the NGO Spectaculu, and the Director of Favela Observatory, Jorge Barbosa, among others. International participants included: art historian and Director of the M.A. program in modern art at Columbia University, Kaira M. Cabanas; Director of Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende, in Chile Claudia Zaldivar; visual arts officer, Ministry of Culture, Columbia, Jaime Cerón; Mexican curator Sofia Olascoaga; Director of Education and Curator of Public Practice from the Walker Art Center, in Minneapolis (USA), Sarah Schultz, and Producer/Curator Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), in Glasgow, Scotland, Katie Bruce.
The event was a result of the coming together of multiple collaborations led by the Experimental Nucleus of Education & Art including MAM’s curators, Instituto MESA and UFF’s research project Contemporary Interfaces: Art, Institutions & Society.

Critical Essays
Diverse critics, researchers, artists and educators were invited to accompany each seminar and contribute an essay reflecting on issues and themes raised. Cayo Honorato, Clarissa Diniz, Daniela Mattos, Irene Small, Luciano Vinhosa, Lígia Dabul, Márcia Ferran, Pedro Hussak, Sofia Olascoaga, Tania Rivera and Tulio Franco. These essays will be made available in English and Portuguese in late 2014.
