Publication Standards
Revista MESA welcomes original contributions (papers, articles, short essays, case studies in diverse formats, videos, and photography) produced by artists, curators, educators, activists, critics, and researchers interested in the contemporary interfaces between art and society.
Guidelines for Authors
Revista MESA is published twice a year. We accept texts proposing an original reflection in any of the following formats:
Case Studies
National and international case studies should explore a context, project, situation, or particular practice offering new critical and creative reflection on the interactions between art and society and/or the fields of art, curatorship or education. The studies should be composed of texts (whether essays, articles, reviews, poems, or chronicles) of between 1,500-6,000 words each (including references and footnotes). Each text should be accompanied by a selection of images and/or videos, photographs or audio experiences or soundtracks. Studies may be submitted individually or as a collective.
Papers
Articles must be original and comprised of critical reflections (whether ethical, aesthetic, and/or socio-cultural) on the contemporary interfaces between art and society. The texts can be between 5,000 and 8,500 words (including references, footnotes, attachments, or appendices). Also articles must be accompanied by a selection of images and/or videos. We accept articles in English or Portuguese. Other languages will be accepted as long as they are accompanied by a translation in English or Portuguese.
Photo Essays
The photographic essays should comprise a selection of approximately 15-25 images together with a 300-500 word critical introduction. The series of original photos should explore a unique perspective or artistic vision reflecting on the contemporary interfaces between art and society.
Video Interviews
Edited video interviews should be between 15 and 20 minutes in length (and can be divided into individual parts). The interview should explore the creative and critical world of a particular artist, researcher, activist, curator, educator, or philosopher and offer a unique and innovative contribution to reflect on aesthetic and ethical practices and dilemmas in contemporary culture. We expect each edited video interview to consist of, not only the interview itself, but also images, original artwork, photographs, music and/or other elements that help to contextualize the reflections of each interviewee.
Conditions for Submission
Before sending materials, authors should verify the conditions of submission in relation to the items listed below:
Text Files – files must be in Microsoft Word or .rtf format (not exceeding 2MB); remove author identification from the text and the properties option in Microsoft Word; tables, charts, graphs, and illustrations should be submitted with captions citing the complete reference source. The author(s) are responsible for the content of the article submitted to the magazine and authorize its publication.
Presentation - US letter (81/2” X 10”) with 1” inch margins. The font should be Arial, size 12, 1.5 line spacing and justified. The file must not have tags (style tabs) or page numbering.
References – Use double quotes when citing brief quotations up to three lines; quotations of more than three lines should be indented left and right by ½ an inch without quotes; use single quotation marks for words with unconventional employment and to indicate quotes inside quotes of up to three lines; use italics for foreign words, neologisms, titles of works and publications; references and/or notes in the body of the text should appear as numbered endnotes listing the complete bibliographical reference along with the page(s) referenced; endnotes should use Arial font size 10 and should meet the following criteria:
– Book:
Author’s last name, first name. Title of Work: subtitle. Edition number. Place of Publication: Publisher, year of publication, page reference.

– Book chapter:
Author’s last name, first name. “Chapter title: subtitle.” In: author/editor last name, first names. Title of Work: subtitle. Edition number. Place of Publication: Publisher, year of publication.

– Journal article:
Author’s last name, first name. “Article title: subtitle.” Journal title, volume number, issue number, start and end of the article pages, month and year.
Example: LIMA, Luiza. “History and gender.” Journal of Contemporary Studies, vol .30, n . 19, p. 400-410, June/1999.
– Dissertations and Theses:
Author’s last name, first name. Title of Work: subtitle. Year presentation. Category (Concentration Area and Grade ) – Institution, Location.

– Sites/blogs etc:

In the case of using an already cited reference: use Ibid when the reference immediately follows the previously fully cited reference or author name and Opcit with page number when the reference has been cited but not sequentially.
Images – In the case of submitting videos to accompany a case study or article or for a proposal for a video interview the file must be sent in AVI or MPEG4 format and have a maximum of 300MB.
Vídeos – Em caso de envio de vídeo para acompanhar um estudo de caso ou artigo ou uma proposta para uma videoentrevista, o arquivo deve ser enviado em formato AVI ou MPEG4, e ter no máximo 300 MB.
Author bio – Each text must be accompanied by a separate Word document with a brief biography of the author(s) between 90 and 120 words.
Copyright
When submitting work to Revista MESA, the author(s) is/(are) declaring that they authorize the publication of the work in the magazine. The author(s) also ensures that the contribution is original. Also, author(s) are responsible to secure the rights to reproduce images (photos, pictures, tables, etc.) and/or original artworks, photography or video.
How to Send Work
To submit material to Revista MESA, the author should submit the text, selection of images and biography images and biography via email to: institutomesa@institutomesa.org noting the phrase “Submission to MESA Magazine” in the email’s subject header. Authors can also use this address should they have any queries or questions about the submission process. Responses regarding the submitted words or queries will be sent by email. Therefore, it is essential that the authors clearly note their email addresses within the body of the email at the time of submission.
Assessment Process
1. Work submitted to Revista MESA will be evaluated semiannually by the editors and guest-editor/contributors for each issue.
2. Editors may accept or reject work submitted for publication in accordance with the editorial policy.
3. In the case of acceptance of submitted material, editors will contact the authors and may suggest changes to text, both with regards to content and/or if necessary issues of suitable writing and presentation.
4. The material approved for publication will be submitted for copy editing.
5. The editors, Revista MESA and Instituto MESA and/or any affiliated individual or institution are not responsible for the opinions, ideas, concepts, and positions expressed in the texts or other material (e.g. photography, video, etc.) which are the sole responsibility of its author(s).
